Calcium infusion test in osteomalacia: an appraisal.

چکیده
Nordin and Fraser (1956), as well as many other authors, have reported that patients with osteomalacia retain more of an infused dose of calcium than normal persons. A high retention of infused calcium by itself has been taken as diagnostic of osteomalacia (Harvald et al., 1962 ; Deller et al., 1963; Thompson et al., 1966). Nordin and Fraser suggested that the calcium retained in osteomalacia was taken up by the uncalcified bone matrix-that is, osteoid tissue. If this was so then the amount of calcium retained should be related to the amount of osteoid. We report here the relation between calcium retention and the amount of osteoid in trabecular bone in 15 patients.

Use of long-term intravenous phosphate infusion in the palliative treatment of tumor-induced osteomalacia.
Tumor-induced osteomalacia is characterized by paraneoplastic defects in vitamin D metabolism, proximal renal tubular functions, and phosphate transport. The resulting hypophosphatemia can cause generalized pain and muscle weakness, which significantly affect the quality of life of the patients. Palliative treatment with calcium, vitamin D, and phosphate replacement is indicated for patients in...
متن کاملPolymorphisms at the Ligand Binding Site of the Vitamin D Receptor Gene and Osteomalacia
Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms have been suggested as possible determinants of bone mineral density (BMD) and calcium metabolism. In this study, our aim was to determine whether there is an association between VDR gene polymorphism and osteomalacia or not. We determined ApaI and TaqI polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor gene in 24 patients with osteomalacia and 25 age-matched he...
متن کاملValue of plasma calcium, phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase measurements in the diagnosis of histological osteomalacia.
Plasma calcium and phosphate concentrations and alkaline phosphatase activities were examined retrospectively in 50 patients with histologically proven osteomalacia and 50 age- and sex-matched control subjects with normal bone histology. An abnormal plasma alkaline phosphatase activity was more useful than an abnormal plasma calcium or phosphate concentration in distinguishing between normal an...
متن کاملThe relief of bone pain in primary biliary cirrhosis with calcium infusions.
Intravenous calcium infusions produced subjective relief of bone pain in 14 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. The bone pain had developed despite long-term parenteral vitamin D therapy. The pain returned after two to three months, but a subsequent course of infusions again brought relief. Before treatment satisfactory iliac crest bone biopsies were obtained in 11 of the patients and were...

on patients with familial hypophosphataemia, normal control subjects, and patients with vitamin D deficient osteomalacia. Intestinal calcium absorption was similar in patients with familial hypophosphataemia and control subjects. The phosphate tolerance test, which is known to be 'flat' in patients with familial hypophospbataemia, was normal in patients with vitamin D deficient osteomalacia. Th...
